The 31 Flavors of Art: Why I Stop Comparing Art to "Vanilla"

Have you ever walked into a Baskin Robbins, looked at the 31 flavors, and watch others ordered plain vanilla? My wife tells me to take her to Baskin Robbins because of the variety, and then she orders vanilla.

It happens. But honestly? Art is kinda like that ice cream shop.
We live in a world where we're surrounded by endless creative choices—Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Classical Realism, Surrealism, Digital Art, and more. Yet, so often, people get stuck in their comfort zone. They order "vanilla."
Here is why I compare art to ice cream, and why it is time to try a new scoop.
1. Art is Subjective (Like Tastebuds)
Just because Rainbow Sherbet is popular doesn't mean you will like it. Similarly, just because a piece of art is hanging in a museum, that doesn’t mean it has to resonate with you.
Some people love the rich, complex, dark chocolate of a Rembrandt.
Others prefer the light, fruity, bright, and airy taste of Impressionism.
Neither is "wrong." It is about what makes your palate happy.
2. "Vanilla" is Fine, But Why Stop There?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking traditional art. It is safe, familiar, and delicious. But if you only ever consume one style of art, you miss out on the thrill of something new.
The Rocky Road: Chaotic, chunky, and unexpected? That’s Jackson Pollock.
The Mint Chip: Classic with a twist? That’s Art Deco.
The Spicy Mango: Weird and surprising? That’s contemporary experimental art.
3. Don't Let It Melt (Appreciate It Now)
Ice cream is meant to be eaten while it’s fresh, or it turns into a soupy mess. Art is similar—it is designed to bring you joy in the present moment. Don't wait for the perfect time to buy that piece you love. Don't wait for permission to enjoy a style that isn't "trendy."
4. It Doesn't Have to Match the Couch
Perhaps the funniest thing about the "art is ice cream" analogy is how people buy it. You wouldn't buy a scoop of Strawberry Cheesecake just because it matches the color of your living room chair, would you?
Stop buying art just to match your decor. Buy it because it sparks joy or makes you think, just like you choose a flavor that makes you feel happy.
The Takeaway
Art is a celebration of joy, creativity, and community. It is meant to be experienced daily, like a treat.
So, the next time you are looking at art—whether in a gallery, online, or in a coffee shop—don't default to the plain scoop. Taste something weird. Try a "Flavor of the Month."
